<intro>

Just hours before the NBA trade deadline, the Sacramento Kings agreed in principle to deal high-scoring guard Kevin Martin to the Houston Rockets in exchange for G Tracy McGrady late Wednesday.

Martin was taken out in the second half of a blowout loss to the Warriors Wednesday, reportedly because the trade had been reached.

The deal reportedly will send Martin, F Kenny Thomas, C Hilton Armstrong and G Sergio Rodriguez to the Rockets in exchange for McGrady, F Carl Landry, F Joey Dorsey and cash.

Sources say that the deal may ultimately send McGrady to the New York Knicks before the 3 p.m. Thursday deadline.

Martin, in his sixth year out of Western Carolina, averaged a career-best 24.6 points per game last year.

McGrady is in his 13th year in the league, but has been limited to just six games thus far in another injury-plagued season for the former All-Star.

    <intro>

Shockingly there was yet another questionable call that ultimately decided the outcome of a Kings-Lakers game, but since that is nothing new I will go straight to something that has to do with the Kings.

I love Tyreke, but there is one thing that he does that drives me insane. He will have the ball at the top of the key and dribble. That's it. He'll just dribble. He will do this until there are as few as four seconds on the shot clock. Shockingly, this often leads to forced shots, turnovers and shot clock violations.

In the 112-103 2OT loss to the team that shall not be named, it happened numerous times. I don't know what needs to happen to get the team into the offense quicker, but whatever Westphal and pals are saying in the huddle isn't working. Reke makes spectacular plays and blows by defenders seemingly without effort, but if he can work on this one particular shortcoming he will be an even greater player.

I'm not too worried about his extremely strange jumpshot and the fact that they damn near hit the catwalk every time. A lot of guys come into the league and aren't great shooters. LeBron had what was considered a pretty weak jumper his rookie season and now he pretty much never misses.

Another thing he needs to work on is understanding last-second situations. It is an amazing sight to watch one guy beat five defenders for a game-winning hoop, but the odds of this working are slim. In the waning seconds of regulation against Cleveland, Evans had a chance to win the game. Instead of passing when he was triple-teamed, he instead dribbled around and forced an impossibly difficult shot. He had a nearly-identical chance at the end of regulation tonight, but didn't even get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.

He is an amazing player and I believe will run away with the Rookie of the Year award, but he is way too good to fall into this current trap. I know he will learn and eventually become one of the elite players in the league, but these last two losses have been extremely devastating to Kings fans. It's great to hang tough against good teams, true. But to lose games due to a lack of execution is not good for the growth of this young and often thrilling team.

Moral victories are for terrible teams. Last year this would have been considered a success. But this team is different. This team is good enough to win. They just need to go out and do it.
</intro>

    <intro>

What do you do when a team falls behind 79-44? Do you get mad at them for playing like complete ass for 26 minutes? Do you turn it off and switch over to an equally terrible Monday Night Football game? Normally yes. But there's just something about this kid. And the entire basketball world can see it.

I'll admit it, when the Kings got down by 35 I stopped paying attention a little bit. I turned over to see the Giants steamrolling the Redskins. I even missed the first part of the comeback. By the time I turned back it was a 19-point game. They had somewhat gotten back into the game I guess, but not really. Nevertheless, it was enough of a move to keep my interest heading into the 4th.

It wasn't a sudden burst that got them back in it from there, it was just solid play. They turned the Bulls over 12 times in the 2nd half and capitalized on nearly every offensive possession. Without really even noticing, the Kings were within 13. Then 10. Then 4. Before you knew what was really happening, the game was tied at 96 after one of Tyreke's patented slashing layups.

After an Evans jumper from the top of the arc that put the Kings up 99-96 (and nearly touched the roof of the United Center) Evans yelled "This is MY house!" to the stunned masses. That isn't really like him to do something like that, but he was in the heat of the moment and I don't think it will become a habit for him.

This was more than a simple comeback. Hell, it was even bigger than the fact that it was the second-biggest comeback in NBA history (the Jazz came back from 36 down in 1996). I would venture to say that it was even bigger than the fact that it put a choke hold on the Rookie of the Year for Evans.

This was a game that Kings fans will remember for a long time. And what's more, I think you have to put Evans in the mix for MVP. I know that might sound odd, but if you consider the actual meaning of the award and that it should (but often doesn't) go to the most indispensable player on a team, then he has to be on that list, doesn't he?

Should he win the MVP were it given out today? No, but his name should be somewhere close to the top.

Sounds crazy, right? Well, maybe a little. But keep in mind that only three rookies in the history of the NBA have finished a season averaging 20 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast (Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan and LeBron James).

It was a simply stunning comeback, one that bumped MNF from the lead story on SportsCenter. Not many December basketball games can do that. Thanks to Evans, the Kings now know that they are never out of any game.
</intro>

    <intro>
Road to Respectability Index

Kings 2009-10: 11-13

Kings 2008-09: 6-18 (11th win came in 40th game of season)

Well that was, umm...interesting. I'll give it points for creativity, but it lost a lot in the Ability To Keep My Hair category. Tyreke had a great national coming out party (assuming anyone east of Colorado stayed up to watch it) and showed why he is the real Rookie of the Year so far.

The most interesting play of the night was when Ime Udoka handed the ball to Caron Butler on an inbounds pass with the Kings up three in the final minute. A gutsy strategy. One that I probably would never go with. Then Evans committed a stupid foul before the Wiz inbounded and they suddenly had the ball with 16 seconds down by one.

Redemption...

Evans was guarding Gilbert Arenas 1-on-1 on the last possession. Arenas, who had just finished running a 5-minute-long layup drill to tighten the game up, made his move. Evans swiped at the ball and poked it free. Arenas had no choice but to foul him as he broke free towards the other end. It was his sixth foul and Evans sank two money free throws.

Omri Casspi, the first Israeli-born player in NBA history, also had a pretty impressive first national exposure. His 22 pts topped his previous career-high of 20

Pretty good crowd out at ARCO tonight. Presumably it had little to do with $1 beer night (...) and the promotion certainly had nothing to do with the Kings' one and only national tv appearance this season (...).

Fantasy studs

Wizards: Gilbert Arenas (33 pts, 6 reb, 6 ast, 2 stl), Antawn Jamison (30 pts, 8 reb)

Kings: Tyreke Evans (26 pts, 6 reb, 6 ast), Omri Casspi (22 pts, 5 reb) Jason Thompson (17 pts, 13 reb, 2 blk)
</intro>

    <intro>
The bad news is that the Kings are losing games on the road. The good news is that they are, well, not losing as badly I guess. Like any young team, the Kings find sometimes strange ways to lose games that they should win. It happens.

After tonight's 118-106 loss to the Spurs (which was much closer than the score suggests) the Kings fell to 9-12 on the season. Not bad for a team that won its ninth game on January 11th last year. To pull off an equally disastrous start to this season they would have to lose 17 more games without another victory.

Not likely.

I love this team. Every game is competitive and they all play with vigor and an expectation of winning. I can handle losing. I really can. What I cannot stand is lack of effort, which is all I have seen from this team the last two or three years. These guys try hard all the time. If they lose it is because of lack of execution or the other team was just better.

Gone are the problem children (Mike Bibby, Brad Miller) and in are the youthful and driven (Tyreke Evans, Omri Casspi, Sergio Rodriguez, Ime Udoka). It's been great to watch so far, and Kings fans have to love where this is headed.

Hell, they inspired me to revive the old Kings blog, so that has to say something about them. They motivated my lazy ass to do something.

    <intro>

All the experts say that Tyreke Evans is the best guard in the draft and that I, as a Kings fan, should be ecstatic that they took him.

So why am I not?

I'm not sure. I don't know a great deal about Evans. There I said it. But what I do know is that he is a ball-dominating TWO guard that is a bad shooter.

Cool...

But this isn't about what Evans is or isn't. The fact is that I don't know what he is and I won't for a good long while. Maybe he's Brandon Roy. Maybe he's Derrick Rose. I just don't know.

However, in the aftershock of yet another Kings shockwave of disillusionment I can't help but wonder what happened in the war room. It was all set up so perfectly. The first three picks went just as I imagined. When the Thunder announced that they were justifiably taking James Harden I did a little mental dance of joy.

"Rubio is OURS!" I thought. But still, there was the knowledge that the Kings had fallen in love with Evans during his workouts. I felt then, and I still feel now, that the best way to put asses in the Arco seats would have been to take Rubio and called the day a success.

But they took Evans. It is probably unfair to him that I felt so betrayed and sunken emotionally when I heard his name called. Like I said, maybe he's Brandon Roy. I don't know, it just seems like the wrong decision to me right now.

I don't know what to make of Omri Casspi from Israel either. I am not impressed with a guy who averaged 12 ppg in Israel last year. I am pretty sure I would be a valuable role player in the Israeli league.

It isn't fair for me to jump to conclusions about him either, but I would have slept a lot better last night had they just had the courage to take DeJuan Blair. I don't care about his knee surgeries. It's not like they were reconstructive or the dreaded microfracture surgeries. All I know is that he put No. 2 pick Hasheem Thabeet over his knee and spanked him like an ornery child when Pitt played UConn last year. He is the catastrophic rebounder that the Kings so desperately need.

Even more tragic is the team that ended up getting Blair. The effing Spurs. Possibly the one team that needed him the least but was smart enough to just do it. Teams will have horrible dreams of Duncan and Blair swallowing up every rebound for the next five years.

After swapping second round picks with the Blazers (in a move that brought point guard depth to Sac in the form of Sergio Rodriguez) the Kings ended up with Jonathan Brockman from Washington. Brockman and Spencer Hawes have played together since eighth grade and were teammates at Washington. Brockman was a fierce rebounder in college, but his size (6'7") makes me wonder if he will be able to do the same in the NBA where he will face much greater competition than he did in the weak Pac-10.

But as far as that pick goes I have no complaints. With the 38th pick, sure you're looking for Michael Redd or Carlos Boozer, but the likelihood that he is there is minimal. Looking to fulfill a need at that spot is what you are looking to do. If he ends up being a good rebounder then that pick was more than justified.

As far as Rodriguez goes, I am pretty happy to see him join the team. He averaged 4.5 pts and 3.6 asts last season in just 15 mpg. Those assist numbers are certainly welcome for a team that was 27th in the NBA in apg last year, especially if he plays 20-25 minutes and those assists end up around 5 per.

The point of this article is that I don't know what it all means. I trust Geoff Petrie. None of us knew who Peja Stojakovic, Hedo Turkoglu or Jason Thompson were either. They all ended up being pretty good to the Kings. I just can't help but feel disappointed in the immediate afterglow.

It's up to Tyreke, Omri and Jonathan to prove my feelings incorrect.

I want to be incorrect. I really do...

    <intro>

The NBA Draft is just three days away and Kings fans are cautiously optimistic about the team's future. That's all we can bear right now, really. What with the uncertain arena situation and seemingly overwhelming fan malaise that has swept through once raucous and dangerously intimidating Arco Arena.

But I don't see the Kings fate tied to what has been a horrendous last two years. Fans have stayed away from Arco, but show me an arena that has held steady with its fans during this economic clusterf%#@.

If and when the economy uncrappifies itself the fans will return. Not because they have to, but because they want to. People say a lot of hateful things about Sacramento, but as a life-long resident I can say with confidence that we are among the most knowledgeable sports fans around. Yeah, we only have one pro team in the city limits, but there are several in every sport within a two-hour drive.

So this is a letter of sorts to Geoff Petrie; a man whose basketball IQ and talent evaluation will forever dwarf my own. There is one way to fix this bleeding orifice of a franchise...

Draft Ricky Rubio.

That's all. I don't want to hear about the great workouts of Tyreke Evans and Jonny Flynn's upside. The buzz created by 19-year-old Rubio would send a spark up the behind of a dormant fanbase that is looking for a reason to come back.

The draft is one giant crap shoot anyway. Can't miss guys do miss sometimes. Often, actually. Guys who were never even considered become stars. This is happening more and more often these days.

The question is not 'What if Rubio is a bust?' That question will be answered with time, not with the incessant doomsday inquiry. And what if he is a bust? Would we be in any worse of a situation than we are right now?

Team workouts give you a sense about certain things, but I do not trust them as the sole talent evaluator. It's the same thing as the NFL Draft Combine. How can you determine a guy's worth on the gridiron by how fast he can run with no pads, helmet or pants? So how, too, do you judge a basketball player's skill by having him practice layups with no defense in attendance?

Everything is set up so nicely for the Kings to get him too. Supposedly the first three picks are set. I never have faith in things turning out how they are destined to be, but the general consensus is that the first three are Griffin, Thabeet, Harden.

Rumor also has it that Rubio wants to come to Sacramento. Makes sense to me. Not only could he be the face that attempts to turn around arguably the NBA's worst team, but he will also be in the heart of the state with the most Spanish-speaking people in the country. Tennessee (Memphis has 2nd pick) and Oklahoma (Oklahoma City has 3rd pick) rank 27th and 26th respectively. Those numbers come from Wikipedia, which certainly does not mean it is 100% accurate, but I don't know why someone would fudge such a random statistic. Not even I have that kind of spare time.

Then there's the possibility that Rubio miht actually be good. (GASP!) I know, I know, blasphemy. But what if he is? What if he is the next Nash-type point guard? One would think that if he shows flashes of brilliance in his rookie season that it might tempt free agents to give Sacramento a long look.

Which brings us to the Kings' payroll situation...

The Kings will have a payroll hanging right around $60 million in 2009-10. That is a stupidly high number for such a terrible team. But relief is not far off. The cancerous contracts of Kenny Thomas ($8,853,125 in '09-10) and Shareef Abdur-Rahim ($6,600,000) will finally come off the books. Neither of those guys deserves the last three digits of their salaries, let alone the first four.

Going into 2010-11, the Kings will have roughly a $40 million payroll, which will free up anywhere from $15-20 million to try and lure a big-time player to the capitol city (they could even spend more depending on how close the organization wants to cut it to the expected $60 million salary cap and the $70-something million luxury tax).

Here's a list that we in Sacramento have become very accustomed to seeing:

LeBron James

Dwyane Wade

Chris Bosh

Amare Stoudemire

Yao Ming

Dirk Nowitzki

Joe Johnson

These are guys who are either free agents or can opt out of their current deals after next season. I think LeBron and Wade can be immediately thrown out the window, but what's to stop Stoudemire or Bosh from taking a chance?

The Kings have talent, folks. I have seen it many times. Kevin Martin is one of the best scorers in the NBA, Jason Thompson showed massive promise as a rookie, Spencer Hawes is developing quickly and they have solid bench players like Beno Udrih, Andres Nocioni and Francisco Garcia. If the Kings got Rubio and he looks like something special, why wouldn't a big man want to come here? There really aren't that many cows here. Sometimes I can go days without seeing one. Write enough zeros and it doesn't matter how many spots the local population has.

It isn't really so far fetched, is it? I'd like to think not.

Almost nothing goes to form in these matters. But it's all lined up for you, Petrie. It's really the only option.

Save the Spaniard, save the franchise.

</intro>

The Kings recently worked out former Memphis guard Tyreke Evans.

Evans' workout partners didn't make it, so he worked out against Kings executives Fat Lever and Shareef Abdur- Rahim.

"I wanted to work out against other people," Evans said. "But the people I wanted to work out with against just didn't work out, so I just went by myself. I ain't running from nobody. I'll work out against the best." (Sacramento Bee)

Evans, 19, is a physically imposing guard prospect. At 6- foot-5 and 217 pounds, he has the size to create matchup problems at the next level.

"My size is an advantage because there are a lot of small guards," Evans said. "I think I'd be a perfect fit here, bringing the ball up and then coming off on the wing."

Evans said he is willing and able to play either the point or two guard and do whatever the coach asks of him.

"If he wants me to create for others, I'll do that," Evans said. "But if he wants me to be the point guard and if I have the option, take the basket, then I'll do that. Whatever he needs. If I was to come here, they have Martin, who's a great player, so I would have to get him a lot of shots before I tried to get mine."

Questions linger about his shooting touch. He shot just 27.4 percent from beyond the arc in college.

"I did a lot of interviews in Chicago (at the predraft combine)," Evans said. "And everybody said it's definitely something I need to work on."

Evans is considered one of the top candidates for the Kings with the fourth overall pick in this year's draft.

With three of the top 31 picks in the upcoming NBA draft, Kings General Manager Geoff Petrie has decided to take an active, hands- on role in the workouts of potential draftees.

On Monday the Kings worked out six players who are expected to be in consideration when the Kings pick at number 23 and number 31.

Louisville swingman Terence Williams, North Carolina shooting guard Wayne Ellington, Florida point guard Nick Calathes, Connecticut point guard A.J Price, Missouri power forward DeMarre Carroll, and Texas power forward Damion Jones participated in the Monday workout.

It is unusual for a General Manager to take such an active role in these types of workouts.

"It's very unique (to have an executive running a workout), because the GM is running it like he's an assistant coach or an intern," Williams said. "(Usually), you see the GMs in a pretty $10,000 suit … twirling their wedding band around and watching us and having conversation on the side. This is the first time I'd seen something like that." (Sacramento Bee)

Ellington added, "I think it's definitely unique. Usually you have one of the assistant coaches running the workout and everybody else is watching, so it was good. It was hands-on."

Also on hand playing active roles for the Kings were special assistant Shareef Abdur- Rahim, director of player development Fat Lever, and director of player personnel Jerry Reynolds.

There were also about a dozen other members of the organization in attendance, including Kings co- owner Gavin Maloof.

The Kings are still without a Head Coach, but Petrie said the decision would come “sooner rather than later.”

The three finalists for the position are Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis, former Phoenix and Seattle head coach Paul Westphal and Boston associate head coach Tom Thibodeau.

Petrie said it was, “unlikely” that any other candidates would be interviewed.

The Sacramento Kings continue to work out players in preparation for the upcoming NBA draft.

They recently worked out former UCLA point guard Darren Collison.

Collison was a four- year starter, but commented on how he expects many freshmen and sophomore guards to be drafted ahead of him.

Guards Ricky Rubio (18), Brandon Jennings (19) and Jrue Holiday (18) all figure to go ahead of Collison (22).

In an interview with the Sacramento Bee, Collison talked about the age factor.

"You look at the young guys, they're getting all of the pub right now," Collison said. "I think some of us older guys, we may not think it's fair all the time. We feel like we all put in four years' hard work in college and see point guards coming out (of college after one year) and getting that recognition right away."

While Holiday is considered an option for the Kings with the fourth pick, Collison is expected to be available when they pick again at number 23. Depending how the Kings first pick goes, Collison could be a solid option for the team, desperately in search of a young point guard.

Collison took a moment to praise Holiday, his former teammate.

"Jrue Holiday, I know he's going to do real well in the NBA” Collison said. "He has a lot of potential ahead of him. And I know a team is going to be real lucky to pick him up. And that's the same way I feel about myself."

Collison remains confident in himself as well.

"I know teams in the second round, late first round are going to be happy with who they pick up," Collison said.

The Kings also worked out guards Tyrese Rice (Boston College) and Greivis Marquez (Maryland) and forwards Jeff Adrien, Omri Casspi, and Robert Dozier.

Casspi (20) is considered an option with the 23rd pick. He is looking to become the first Israeli- born NBA player. He has played overseas for the last four years and acknowledged that a team may choose to draft him and keep him overseas for a while to continue to work on his game.

"When I came here, I wanted to make the NBA, but I'm an open-minded guy," Casspi said. " I realize there are some teams that don't need me immediately and want me to go back to Europe. I think it's a good option for me."

The Kings continue to work out players for both the four and 23rd pick.

With tonight's announcement of the draft order for this year's NBA lottery, the future of a franchise hangs in the balance.

The Sacramento Kings have the oldest non- renovated arena in the NBA.

City officials, owners, and the league have been researching, conducting studies and trying to find a way to get a new arena built in Sacramento. The process began early in this decade.

Time and time again, plans have fallen through, arguments among all concerned parties have raged and a fan-base that has loyally supported the team for over 20 years has been caught in the middle.

The situation has reached it's critical mass. Team owners and league officials have placed a deadline of March 2010 to have “significant progress with a light at the end of the tunnel” on a new arena.

Kings ownership (the Maloof family) has been losing money on the Kings for the last two years.

The new arena is paramount to the Kings staying in Sacramento for the long haul. Should an arena deal not be made, the team will be forced to relocate.

Crucial to the process, the Kings must improve on the court to help revitalize an arena that was once considered the biggest home- court advantage in the league.

How does this all relate to tonight?

Tonight the Kings will have the best chance at the number one pick (25%).

This is a draft class believed to have just two franchise players in forward Blake Griffin and Spanish guard Ricky Rubio.

Assuming the Kings get one of those two picks, all will be well. The team will get a franchise player to go along with an already potent young core. Future success on the court will be a virtual certainty.

Falling to the third or fourth pick would prove disastrous.

They would then still get a quality player, but miss out on their best chance to get a legitimate superstar to lead them.

Lacking a franchise player, the team's ceiling would be set much lower, making a return to greatness and profitability virtually impossible.

The Kings have to have one of these top two picks. They have to. Any other result will literally set in motion a series of events that will inevitably lead the team to relocation and leave a one- sport City without a team.

This is what it has come down to for the franchise and the City.

Tonight, four ping- pong balls will decide the fate of the franchise.

Today the Sacramento Kings made official what many had been expecting by firing coach Kenny Natt.

Natt took over as interim head coach early in the season when the team fired Reggie Theus.

Natt went 11-47 as head of the Kings, who finished with a 17-65 record. The Kings showed little improvement under his lead.

Never thought to be in the team's long term plans, Natt was let go along with assistants coaches Rex Kalamian, Jason Hamm, Randy Brown and Bubba Burrage.

The team will begin immediately in their search for a new head coach.

Thought to be in the running are former Kings and Wizards coach Eddie Jordan and TNT analyst and former coach Mike Fratello.

    <intro>
One of the forgotten parts of NBA All-Star Weekend, the Rookie-Sophomore game has always been an attractive premise to me. It's a chance for rookies to come in and prove that one year of experience does not an advantage make.

However, the history of the game has gone much the way of high school in which the sophomores skate and the freshmen get thrown in garbage cans.

Since 2000, when the game was first officially called the Rookie-Sophomore game, the sophs have won seven of the nine games, winning by an average of 22.4 points.

The problem is in how the game is played. I am fully aware that All-Star Weekend is fun and games and that nothing is taken too seriously. But with the fantastic idea of this game, pitting future stars against each other as a precursor to All-Star games future, a little effort would be nice.

The game has ended in recent years with final scores like 142-118 and 2007's preposterous 155-114 final score. I don't want to see young players playing like it's a fundraiser at Rucker Park and playing solely to make the audience ooh and ahh.

I don't give a rat's ass about how 'crunk' Kevin Durant's moves are, nor do I want to have an abacus at hand to count the number of half court alley-oops. Leave that crap for the All-Star Game where we know who the players are and they have nothing to prove.

The Rosters

Rookies

Michael Beasley, F, Heat

Rudy Fernandez, G, Blazers

Marc Gasol, C, Grizzlies

Eric Gordon, G, Clippers

Brook Lopez, C, Nets

O.J. Mayo, G, Grizzlies

Greg Oden, C, Blazers

Derrick Rose, G, Bulls

Russell Westbrook, G, Thunder

Sophomores

Aaron Brooks, G, Rockets

Wilson Chandler, F, Knicks

Kevin Durant, F, Thunder

Jeff Green, F, Thunder

Al Horford, C, Hawks

Luis Scola, F, Rockets

Al Thornton, F, Clippers

Rodney Stuckey, G, Pistons

Thaddeus Young, F, Sixers

The main reason that this year's game has caught my attention is that this year's rookies are well ahead of last year's right now. Sure, Green, Scola, Young and Stuckey have all gotten a ton better this year, but they were nowhere to be found last year. The only guys who were worth a crap last year as rookies were Durant and Horford. Now look at the rookies. Every guy on that roster is playing a huge role on his team. There are four guys (Rose, Mayo, Westbrook, Gordon) who are absolute locks to be stars in the league.

If this game were to be played out as more than a giggle-fit dunkfest set to Benny Hill music, I think the rookies would have a real good shot at showing their big brothers what's up.

But we already know that the game will not be taken seriously. How? Because Dwight Howard and Dwyane Wade have been selected as assistant coaches for the two teams. I love both of those guys. They have great personalities and are outrageously phemonenal players. But you know that they will both be mic'd up and will be pushing the guys to do crazy plays that in my opinion no one really wants to see.

There is a reason that the game draws about half the capacity of the arena every year. Don't you think that a game played reasonably hard between the future stars of the league would draw a fair bit more attention than it does now? I think it would.

I want to see Russell Westbrook against Rodney Stuckey, Kevin Durant against Michael Beasley and Al Horford against Greg Oden.

I also feel compelled to get up on my Sacramento soapbox for a moment.

It is no secret that the Kings are terrible right now and in the process of an overhaul. I get it. But that doesn't mean that the team is barren of excellent young talent. The Thunder are god-awful too, but they have three reps in the game, all deserving I might add.

The Kings should have a representative on both teams. Sophomore Spencer Hawes would be taken much higher than 10th if the draft was re-done today. He might be the third pick after Oden and Durant. But he isn't a name, so he isn't there. It certainly isn't a numbers issue as Hawes has put up really good numbers when healthy.

As far as Hawes is concerned, this is not a homer pick. I hated the guy last year. He was looking like a big, slow guy with poor motor skills playing in a fast game. He did stupid stuff all game every game and at one point I thought he might have been a hired assassin by a rival NBA team.

But not anymore.

The guy is very capable of putting up 15 and 10, has shown an accuity for blocking shots and has the ability to play with great skill inside as well as knock down the three. This time last year there was no chance in hell that he could hit a three. Now when he takes one I feel confident that it at least has a chance to go in.

As far as rookies go, Jason Thompson has been starting for weeks and has proven that staying four years in college is not career suicide. He's averaging 12 points and seven rebounds as a starter and is proving once again that Geoff Petrie knows more about NBA talent than Stuart Scott and Jay Bilas.

I know that they don't have the star power of Greg Oden and... who the hell is Aaron Brooks? Anyways, the fact is that they both belong there and the fact that neither was invited is a shame.

I didn't know that the rosters were only nine deep, which I guess kind of makes sense for a single game. But if I was running the game I'd have Thompson there over Gasol and Hawes over Brooks. I know that the sophs don't have any guards, but seriously. Who the freaking crap is Aaron Brooks?

I get that it's a game for the fans and that the big names get the invites, but ask any coach or GM in the NBA who the best nine rookies and sophomores are, you'll see a large dose of Hawes and Thompson on those lists.

I'll watch the game this time in the hopes that maybe by some miracle the game is made interesting. But in the end, a blowout on the side of the rooks might be a nice change of pace.

Feel the Roar*

    <intro>
The Sacramento Kings came out on fire, with six guys in double figures to prevent record making against the Lakeshow.

SACRAMENTO – History was almost etched in stone as the (5-16) Sacramento Kings survived the conference leading (17-2) Los Angeles Lakers 113-101 Tuesday night. Never in the 51 years of the Sacramento Kings franchise have they lost nine games in a row. Tuesday night wasn’t going down in the history books, as the Kings coach Reggie Theus, brought a young scrappy team fueled to play the defending Western Conference champs.

The Kings started off strong in the first quarter to go up 13-4 with eight minutes left from a strong play by center Brad Miller. Coach Theus had the defense playing exceptional to begin the game, as the Kings held the Lakers 3-11 from the field halfway through the first.

Sacramento shot an astounding 58% from the field in the first quarter as the Lakers defense looked lackadaisical. Third year F/G from Louisville, Francisco ‘Cisco’ Garcia added nine of his team high 21 points in the first quarter to get the Kings rolling. With the way Sacramento came out shooting you would have never known superstar guard Kevin Martin was in active. Of course, being an in-experienced team as the Kings are, they let the Lakers creep back in the game with an 8-2 run to end the first quarter 27-22 Sacramento.

The Lakers weren’t discouraged by the mighty pride in the young Kings squad, as they went on a 16-0 run. Eighth year man from France, Pau Gasol F, caused a lot of problems for the Kings defenders, as he could not be stopped. Gasol dissed the Kings frontcourt with 14 points of his 25 points in the first half. The Frenchman also added 12 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks to get rights for best player of this game.

Gasol wasn’t quite enough to hold down the fiery youngsters though. Rookie forward Jason Thompson came off the bench to flush down an emphatic jam and get the crowd into the game.

Thompson is a very good player, even if you haven’t heard of Rider University. Windex should sponsor Thompson for how much glass he cleans in the game. In a limited 16 minutes he had the second most on the team with eight rebounds.

As the quarter winded down, key veterans Bobby Jackson G and John Salmons G/F step up to not allow another end of quarter collapse. Jackson started to finally get out of his shooting slump with back-to-back three’s to end the second quarter.

Sacramento only took a 56-51 lead into halftime, but hope they can continue the hot shooting and good defensive play in the second half.

Superstar Kobe Bryant G came out in the second half trying to find his shot instantly, but was only finding the loud clang of the rim. Although Bryant had 28 points, he shot 9-25 and wasn’t getting the team involved. Gasol was the only Laker to really get anything going.

Most of the third quarter was trading buckets back and forth, as no one could get an advantage. Until, seventh year man John Salmons G/F made a big three to put the Kings up 87-80 with 50 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Kings take a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter with Arco Arena in pandemonium. Only the clatter of thunder-sticks and rattle of cowbells can be heard through out the central valley on this frigid night.

Bobby Jackson and Francisco Garcia came out blazing to put the Kings on an 8-0 run. Six of the eight points were three pointers by Jackson, to put the Kings up 95-82. Garcia later added two three’s of his own from the baseline to nail the coffin shut.

The Lakers plain and simple did not have any of that 17-2 record coming into this game; they more looked like the 2-20 Oklahoma City Decibel Meters. Coach Phil Jackson of the Lakers clearly took the young Kings squad lightly and he paid for it.

Sacramento moves to 5-16 on the year and can improve on that record, if the team brings the same intensity every night that it did against the Lakers. Coach Theus and the Kings will have to bring that same level of play in the next game as they travel down to L.A. for a rematch of Tuesday’s game.

</intro>
